How Did The Restaurant Group plc’s (LON:RTN) 16.31% ROE Fare Against The Industry? With an ROE of 16.31%, The Restaurant Group plc ( LSE:RTN ) outpaced its own industry which delivered a less exciting 10.39% over the past year. However, whether this above-industry ROE is actually impressive depends on if it can be maintained. A measure of sustainable returns is RTN’s financial leverage. If RTN borrows debt to invest in its business, its profits will be higher. But ROE does not capture any debt, so we only see high profits and low equity, which is great on the surface. But today let’s take a deeper dive below this surface.   Check out our latest analysis for Restaurant Group What you must know about ROE Return on Equity (ROE) weighs Restaurant Group’s profit against the level of its shareholders’ equity. An ROE of 16.31% implies £0.16 returned on every £1 invested, so the higher the return, the better. Investors that are diversifying their portfolio based on industry may w...

In trade war between US and trading partners, small stocks may fare best

In trade war between US and trading partners, small stocks may fare best : In a trade war between U.S. and trading partners, small stocks may fare best Adam Shell, USA TODAY Published 6:30 a.m. ET March 23, 2018 If a big-time trade war breaks out between the U.S. and its trading partners, small-company stocks will be far from the front lines. In general, a trade war isn’t good for stocks because it likely will hurt the global economy and profits of big companies that do a lot of business globally. The winner in the event of a trade war, therefore, will likely be small American companies that get most of their sales from the United States, says Alec Young, managing director of global markets research at investment firm FTSE Russell. Fears of a trade war rose Thursday after President Trump said the U.S. plans to target China with an estimated $60 billion in tariffs on goods it imports to the U.S. That move follows Trump’s earlier decision to slap tariffs on steel and al...

Is Tesla Worthless?

Image
Jim Chanos, the short seller famous for betting against Enron, has said he thinks Tesla Inc.’s stock is “worthless.” Chanos got some new evidence this week that may support his short sales against Elon Musk’s car company. A string of executives have  headed for the exits , including a surprising number from the company’s finance team, as Tesla is dogged by questions about whether it can meet its production targets.     The chief financial officer left abruptly last year in a curious turn of events, where he was replaced by his predecessor: Deepak Ahuja served as Tesla’s CFO from 2008 to 2015 and then took over the job again in March 2017,  according to his LinkedIn . Then late last year, one of Tesla’s audit committee members, Steve Jurvetson, went on leave from the board ( following accusations of misconduct , which he has denied). The vice president of business development and director of battery technology both left in the past year. Jon McNeill, one of Te...

Great thoughts from a student on money and spirituality.

My relationship with Christ coincides with the financial decisions that I make every day because my relationship with Christ affects every single aspect of my life. Specifically, when it comes to finance, God has much to say about it. There are over 2,000 verses with respect to money in the Bible, because the Lord knows that it can become our master instead of our tool, as He intended for it to be. We are instructed in the Bible to be good stewards of everything that God has given us, because ultimately everything is His, we just get to have it for this segment of time. Also, we are instructed to grow what He has given to us and to use it wisely.  This can be found in Psalm 24:1 where it states "The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." Furthermore, a great example of finance and investment is as follows: “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave fiv...
